Our 10+ year old HP workhorse printer/copier/scanner died this week and this replaced it without a hitch. I never opened a manual or installed software, it just worked on our home network. I plugged in an ethernet cable and Win11 saw it and I was printing in a minute. I used the front panel to set a static IP address and then configure the wireless connection. The Microsoft Scan utility worked perfectly. All 8 computers in the house can print and scan.I followed the advise of people and set the Low Toner action to "continue" instead of "stop". I'm considering using 3rd party toner cartridges by moving the chip from the Brother toner to the replacement. This is my third purchase if this printer. Of course my previous purchases were earlier iterations of this particular model. They are easy to maintain and repair. The print quality is, well, laser quality. The printer supplies are reasonably priced. A word of warning - don't chance off brand toner. Use Brother supplies. If you have a SOHO, this is a printer that should be on your short list for consideration.Used t h e printer to print legal documents.I purchased this for kids, especially to use with their air print. We've been using this printer more than a year with no issues. I like that it has the option to print on both sides of the paper. It is also easy to scan documents. Print quality is very good. And air print function works great without issues!Bulky and sleeps too much but solidIf HP design had this quality that would be perfect mergeJust installed and have successfully: Scanned to PC, Airprint (iPhone), print from Desktop PC (running Windows), and Macbook Air Laptop. None of these devices is wired, but I DID connect the printer via Ethernet to my Motorola Router/Modem combo. I used the provided disc to install on my Windows Desktop PC, and then after installing, it asked if I would like to make the available updates (just two) and those updates were under a minute combined. Overall having to mess with the wires behind my entertainment center in order to get the cables connected took longer than the actual installation of the printer which makes me VERY happy.Like other reviewers, I went back and forth on whether to order this model bc of the negative reviews - but when I filtered OUT the reviews for the L2540DW and focused on the newer model L2550DW, I saw some of the complaints (most of which were negligible) and focused on installing the printer via ethernet to make it easier, which it was. I can't speak to setup via wireless Wi-Fi only (that seems to be the big complaint, but setting up past printers or even a new internet connection in a new apartment without an ethernet is always a hassle), but I will say so far I am happy with the print quality and speed of install. If you're going to setup via Wi-Fi only, I would do as other reviewers suggested and go straight to the Brother site to download the software prior to install.I also turned off "DEEP SLEEP" mode right away at the suggestion of MPFerry(thanks!) as follows:"On the printer:1. Menu button2. 1. General Setup then OK3. 2. Ecology then OK4. 3. Sleep Time then OK5. While you see the sleep number, push Minus button and Stop/Exit button at the same time6. DEEP SLEEP mode - push Minus button for OFF then OKThis should turn off Deep Sleep mode permanently! (Or at least until the next firmware update is installed, then you may have to do it again.)"Now, to override the alert Brother gives you when it THINKS you are out of ink, I have user Allegra to thank for that as follows:"Go to the buttons and follow these instructions:MENU > GENERAL SETTINGSPress the down button (minus sign) until you get to REPLACE TONERHit OKPlease the down button (minus sign) until you see CONTINUEHit OK"Planning on doing as others suggested and when it comes time to refill toner, removing the chip from the original Brother brand toner and saving to place on the generic toner I'll buy.In order to scan to either of my Macbooks, I did need to install the drivers etc and download the iPrint&Scan app from Brother, but its not something I'm bothered by. I installed on my macbooks right away so I wouldn't have to think about it in the future. Is it annoying that I can't hit the scan button on the printer and just have it ask me which computer I'd like to send it to? Yes, but a minor inconvenience that didn't put me over.Bottom line, if you're able to connect the printer to your network via ethernet - it'll save you a lot of trouble installing. Fix settings right away to turn off "Deep Sleep" mode, and force the printer to "Continue" past when it thinks you're out of toner.I'll update if it takes poop.I needed a multi-sheet scanner, and they are expensive. This Brother multi-function machine came up in the search, and I had good results with a Brother MFC which was retired when laptops stopped having parallel ports. I've owned at least six scanners before, some of which failed and others fell to obsolescence. Many printer manufacturers set their printer prices so as to make their major profit from selling supplies, and this seems true of Brother. The main issue in the reviews for this product is that Brother has chipped the print cartridge so you can't use cut price "compatible" toner cartridges. I already have a printer I like, an Epson ink-tanker so I did not care about printing costs. It turned out that the multisheet scanner and associated software on the Brother works very nicely. The installation to WLAN was simple and straightforward, and the machine was connected without having to mess with a temporary USB install. The scan software is simple and powerful, and, although the Brother prints only in B&W, the scan functions support color. A right-click on the scan function buttons reveal the configuration screens and everything is simple and straightforward, and works with fewer keystrokes than any other scan software I have used. I scanned a 98 page document in B&W in less than four minutes, including hopper changing time as I had to do it in two shots to observe the 50 sheet limit. It scans twice as fast in B&W than color. It scans to all the popular formats, including PDF and a range of graphic formats. It also has a less-seen but very powerful OCR feature. You can scan directly to the Optical Character Recognition software and get output in formats like Open Office, .txt or Word documents, among others. I tried the OCR feature on a page of printed text and it produced a text file in less than a minute with perfect results. Older OCR features I used back in the 1990s was a separate program that produced a lot of errors, requiring correction, but this OCR was seamless and perfect. The scan features are well up to the standard of machines costing over $300. I've only had this thing a couple of days and can't speak to its reliability, but previous Brother equipment I have used was well-engineered and worked until connectivity obsolescence set in. The black and white laser printing, when briefly tested, worked fine but I can't speak to the print features. If you want a top-of-the-line multisheet scanner this product might meet your needs at a fraction of the cost of a standalone scanner, which is primarily due to Brother's greedy policy of subsidizing printer hardware and making their money on the toner.I converted from inkjet to laser and i'm loving it! A solid printer! The included installation CD did not work for me, you will have to download the "Full Driver & Software Package" from Brother's support page online (after entering the model number).Setup is fairly straight forward; it may take a couple of tries for it to initially connect to the WiFi, I had to use the WLAN Setup Wizard from the printer LCD midway through the computer software installation, and then proceed with the installation once the printer was connected to the WiFi.Only need to set it up once and it is pretty much available to use from any other device connected to the WiFi networkReally well built printer, very impressive performance.I bought this for my wife who s a teacher and is constantly printing tests, lessons, worksheets, etc.The HP all-in-one- inkjet I originally got her her was causing her many, many problems. But we always found a way to get past the headaches and make it work. Then it finally gave up the ghost. The touchscreen stopped working so we couldn't connect the printer to our WiFi network anymore.I told my wife that I was through with inkjets and I would get her a laser printer. After a little research, I found out that not only were laser printers very affordable, but that Brother had an excellent reputation for laser printers! At this price point, I had no trouble taking a chance. It's only been a month, but unlike the HP inkjet, the Brother DCPL2550DW has worked flawlessly right from the beginning without a hitch. The only time-consuming part was the initial set-up where I downloaded the lastest software from the Brother web site. After that, we were treated to a printer that actually works well without any trouble! It lacks some of the refinement other printers may offer, like a colored touchscreen, but considering how our HP ended up failing on us, I'll forgo the little extras and stick to a reliable workhorse like this Brother DCPL2550DW.No more headaches. No more problems. A wireless printer that actually works! My wife and I could not be any happier.L'imprimante fonctionne bien, jusqu'au moment où l'indication "replace toner" apparait, et ce, même si l'imprimante fonctionne encore très bien. Pure garbage. I've liked Brother printers in the past, but this one is ALWAYS offline on all devices. I will attempt to wake it by pressing a button (like the Brother Tech Help assistant said) but is always showing offline on all of my PC's or Phones. Not sure why this occurs, as the other printers in my house work juuuust fine. I can't send this hunk of garbage back, as I've missed the window, but this was sent to us last August, and has been crappy since November...we weren't really using it much until then, and is primarily used by my wife for her business. Trust me, it's been a pure headache and I'm an IT Professional that's worked with 100's of printers. Do NOT buy this printer, and I guess we'll be done with Brother printers now for good.Bought this for my mom, lite user, she copy passage from book/News paper etc.... 55 page in (checked in the menu, in like a week) , already "Replace Toner", tried to shake it, didn't work, i mean it's kind of ridiculous ..... I almost want to send it back at that point .... I know the demo cartridge is usually for less page than the one you buy after, but it's still ridiculous, 55 page, it's Ink territory, i mean, 500, alright for demo cartridge, but 55 ... I still have my MFC-7886DW , an i doubt i will change it for another brother (Work flawlessly)
