I recently dumped Microsoft Windows (expect this to be a growing trend) and now run Linux exclusively; however, finding a printer that works with Linux has been a challenge. The Brother HL2240D fits the bill perfectly. I can clearly remember selling Laser printers for upwards of $3,000 so a monochrome Laser printer for $100, and that included shipping, is a deal. Linux is still foreign to many, including hardware vendors, so installation isn't as straight forward as on Microsoft Windows; however the install is relatively painless.1 - As root, download the rpm file for your the distro you're running ([...]); note, as of this writing, this is a valid URL however it may change. This is the source URL for the Linux driver page - [...]2 - Find then download the drivers for the printer you've purchased; in my case, HL-2240D (I suggest downloading the rpm files)3 - Go to the directory where the rpm files were downloaded to and install them using rpm -ihv fileName.rpm4 - Open your favorite text editor then printIf all went well, your print will be successful. Brother doesn't ship a usb cable (I haven't a clue why) with the printer but they're readily available at Fry's or Radio Shack. As for the noise others complained about, folks, it's a $100 printer so don't expect utter print silence. Given it's performance and price, it's a really good deal. I've not used the duplex feature, however, the test page prints in duplex and I didn't experience any issues printing it.
