i bought this during a ridiculous deal. id wanted a brother for a while, a good year prior to [finally] purchasing this one. my last printer was a samaung, my favorite brand, but it was huge and when i used it, the lights on the desk flickered for twenty minutes haha no lie. im a writer and i do most of my revising at night. so i print a lot of pages. this prints pages quickly.im using a windows pc with windows7 premium 64 bit operating system. the install did not require a disc to set up. in fact, how i set it up is important: i simply plugged a usb from the unit to the computer, then plugged the power cord into the wall, and then turned it on. it set itself up in a few minutes. i printed a test page, which came out as a perfect print.the unit is smaller. my last unit was a monster. i loved that it held a full ream of paper, but i didnt like that it was big enough for me to hurl angry birds at it.. this unit is 7" high x 14.5" long x 14" deep. even though it only holds 250 sheets of paper, it does not command a lot of space.it does not come with a usb cord. printers anymore come with a power cable but NOT a usb cable. it's been like that for a long while.. but, likely you'll have one or two lying around the house. if not, you can find them on ebay all day for three dollars with free shipping.the starting cartridge is only good for about 600 prints. so be prepared in the following month to order another. the high yield ones last for about 2500 prints. they run about $40. if you are more adventurous, you can just order more toner from a seller on ebay for around $15 and cross reference youtube on exactly how to refill toner cartridges. but for me, ill deal with the less messy NEW cartridge for $40 a year. seems like a good enough deal for my household.it prints well. i turn the printing way down to 300 dpi. but if youre using it in the office and need good prints for letterhead and whatnot, you can switch it up to 1200 HQ prints. the software is very user friendly.the final grade: if i bought this for $200 retail, i would assume that it has wifi connectivity. it does not. but, for the $50 i spent, it is awesome, five solid stars across the board. like i sentenced above, i know others with this make and model and all are quite pleased. well worth the price if you can gauge it under $80. just get it.::UPDATE::i purchased this printer on october 1st. it is now feb 23. the low toner cartridge light is on. so i probably have a hundred or so prints left. i ordered a high yield one for $16.99 via ebay with free shipping and it's still in the box after a couple of weeks. i think in the near future, usb cables are going to be obsolete (they should already be, for tvs, blu ray players, and printers and such, but it is gonna take some time still, it seems..) because all such devices will be imbedded with wifi. that is my only complaint, that this unit doesnt have wifi. i have enough plugged into the back of my computer. but for the price, it is well worth it still. almost five months along and it is still perfect for my uses.i have never tried printing envelops with it because i never print envelops. and, i have read horrible things re: that. but i have used it to print shipping labels and also returning labels. they are thicker than paper and have a different texture (i buy the packets from office depot and the software used to print them are free downloads from their website and works just fine with this printer's software) and i have not had any trouble printing them.i never use the HQ setting. i have used the 600 dpi setting a time or two for crisp looking prints, but most everything is perfectly fine with the 300 dpi setting. this is an awesome budget printer and that is how i mostly use it.
